Not all types of music are governed by gender. Typical punk music does not consist of romance and is liberating for women, as they now become the subjects, rather than the objects. Female musicians in the punk world of music are far from that of the ideology of rock music; having a “strident insistence that was far removed from the appeal of most postwar glamour girls” (265). The suggested effect of punk music is that on highly self-referential complication of voice, identity, and personal agency. The female scream assumes a new role, confrontational; of which their sonic intensity was previously associated with the male screams of heavy metal vocalists. Most of all, female screams in punk music has acted as liberating and empowering realizations of the female experience, and has opened performative pathways for a whole generation of audience members containing women. Kelly Osbourne, daughter of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne, came on the punk scene in 2002. One of her most liberating songs on her first album was “Shutup” in which she states:

The majority of today’s music ranges from classical all the way to the most liberal; punk and rock metal. In terms of the most liberal style of music for females, punk music would fall into that category, but rock and roll would limit women in respect to being objects of desire rather than subjects.
